Soul Bar - Augusta, GA-
Soul Bar - Augusta, GA
Soul Bar opened in 1995 and quickly became a great, eclectic local hangout, complete with a shrine to local soul legend James Brown. You can always find great music, cool local art and someone you know at this place, which is still thriving nearly 15 years later. They’ve introduced Squeaky’s “Disco Hell” tradition to new generations.

Red Lion Pub - Augusta, GA-
Red Lion Pub - Augusta, GA
This place was around for some 70 years as a restaurant, music venue and bar. A multi-generational Augusta favorite, this spot has great meaning to a lot of different people. I spent a lot of time there in the late ‘90’s listening to bands like local faves In Like Flynn, Drivin’ N’ Cryin’, Soul Miner’s Daughter, etc. It’s been called “quite possibly the best music venue ever in existence in Augusta”.

Squeaky's Tip Top-
Squeaky's Tip Top
Squeaky’s was open for around 60 or so years. Like Red Lion, this joint has a lot of meaning for a lot of different generations of Augustans. It closed some time ago, but it is not uncommon to hear people to this day say they want to reopen Squeaky’s. It was a true watering hole and originator of “Disco Hell”.

Allen's Hamburger's- Athens, GA-
Allen's Hamburger's- Athens, GA

A beloved hamburger joint and bar, Allen’s Hamburger’s in Athens, GA, closed its doors on New Year’s Day in 2004 after 48 years! A hangout for generations of Athens’ natives and UGA students, the dive provided a showcase for local musicians, including the B-52’s who wrote about “going down to Allen’s for a 25 cent beer…” in their song “Deadbeat Club”. The original Allen’s Hamburgers as seen above was torn down after it closed. The Athens’ institution was recently reopened in a new location by two former UGA grads.

Bert's Bar - Sullivan's Island, SC-
Bert's Bar - Sullivan's Island, SC

This beachfront watering hole closed its doors in December 2007 after serving burgers and beer to locals and beach bums for 30 years. Bert’s was opened, originally as a pharmacy, in the 1930’s, hence the slogan painted on the side of the bar, “If it hurts, go to Bert’s”. Opening as a bar and grill featuring live music in 1977, Bert’s quickly became a landmark on the island. Local patrons said it felt like a death in the family when Bert’s doors finally closed for good.

Booger Bottom - Lake Blackshear, GA-
Booger Bottom - Lake Blackshear, GA
Tucked into a corner of Spring Creek on South Georgia's Lake Blackshear, the Spring Creek Marina, affectionately known to patrons as "Booger Bottom" has been a popular watering hole for years.  If you haven't bellied up to the bar with a cold beer, cheeseburger, and a pickled egg, you haven't experienced the lake!
